Dygard began his career writing sports for the Arkansas Gazette after earning his degree from the University of Arkansas. In 1954 he was offered a job with the Associated Press and went on to work in several of their bureaus, including Little Rock, Arkansas, Birmingham, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana. He was also bureau chief in Tokyo, Japan, Chicago, Illinois, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Little Rock, Arkansas.
Thomas retired from the Associated Press in 1993 and moved to Evansville, Indiana, but continued writing children’s novels.
