Sue Monk Kidd’s celebrated novel “The Secret Life of Bees” makes a smooth transition to the screen with its story of a young girl’s coming of age in the midst of the backgrounds of both the Civil Rights movement and the early days of modern feminism.

Set in the American South of 1964, it tells of 14-year-old Lily (Dakota Fanning) who, along with her nanny Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson) – a victim of racist brutality – runs away from her abusive single father’s home with hopes of finding a connection to her late mother, who was killed in a tragic accident years earlier.
