    Based on the memoir The Story Of The Trapp Family Singers, this classic 1965 musical plays a little fast and loose with the facts (Von Trapp wasn’t as reserved as the film makes out, while the children don’t remember tutor Maria being as cuddly as Julie Andrews, either). Historical quibbles aside, it’s a lovely movie about how Maria comes to care for widower Von Trapp’s seven children featuring beautiful locations, unforgettable performances from Andrews and Christopher Plummer and, of course, those perfect Rodgers and Hammerstein songs (My Favourite Things, Do Re Mi, Edelweiss).

    There are lots of based-on-a-true-story movies about animals, including the lovely Oddball And The Penguins, Born Free and Balto, but cutest of all has to be 2011’s story about a bottlenose dolphin named Winter that was rescued off the Florida coast. Having lost her tail, she was fitted with a prosthetic one and her adventures are fictionalised here, with Winter playing herself alongside Nathan Gamble, Harry Connick Jr, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman.
